Our Story

We are a women’s collective based at the Ishasha Community Centre in Southwestern Uganda. Each colorful, hand-woven basket contains our hope for a better future for our children.

The Ishasha Community Centre in Uganda, opened in the summer of 2023, is a project of Save Wildlife Uganda, a nonprofit organization that seeks sustainable conservation through community participation and human coexistence with wildlife.

Until recently, poaching presented a real threat to the park’s famous wildlife because impoverished villagers around the park needed to feed their families and protect their crops.

The Ishasha Community Centre serves as home base for the Women of Conservation Uganda team, giving local women an opportunity to generate income by producing beautiful handwoven baskets and clothing.

By creating economic opportunity for women in the Ishasha Sector, women have a stronger voice, a means to educate their children, and their families are much less likely to turn to poaching as a way to survive.
